The public is invited to bid for these “brilliant but unrealized ideas” that Sarah Vanhee collected from artists in France and all over the world, then put up for auction with a proper auctioneer. This playful, interactive show humorously addresses the question of speculation and intellectual property on the art market. Bidders are welcome!
Most artists have a stock of ideas that, for whatever reason, they have never been able to implement, because they are too expensive, or too simple, or too complicated, or too similar to an earlier project, or simply because they are so perfect that to realize them would be an anticlimax. The Great Public Sale of Unrealized but Brilliant Ideas is at once a homage to these nuggets of invention and a questioning of the art market and its players. At this faithful recreation of an auction, complete with secretary, expert, presenter and bona fide auctioneer, the urge to bid becomes well nigh irresistible.
Sarah Vanhee graduated from the Amsterdam School of the Arts in 2007. Her multifaceted work embraces performance, visual art and literature, with a preference for in situ creations.
