Katja Schenker
Born in 1968 in St. Gallen (Switzerland), she lives in Zürich (Switzerland).
Revisiting land art, Katja Schenken's interventions follow a long preliminary work of understanding the chosen place. Combining physical involvement and the forces of nature, her works are subject to time and climatic changes, which influence their evolution over the years. The artist gives chance a determining place in his work and uses it as a partner in creation.
What does the subtitle of the exhibition "Where I am I do not exist" mean to you?
In order to have an experience in a specific place, you have to recreate the place, the terrain (there) and the self (I) each time.
What does art allow you to accomplish?
The continents move one to two centimetres every year without us noticing. This movement is due to mantle convection. The origin of the upward forces within the Earth continues to cause debate within the geosciences. My work is inspired by this world-matter in continuous movement. I have developed a material, a kind of pudding made of raw materials extracted from the earth to meet cultural needs. Art can free these materials from their functionality and return them to their own laws of erosion.
