Turning the spotlight on her own artistic career, the American choreographer Jennifer Lacey makes use of her solo piece Skin Mitten to create 2 Discussions of an Anterior Event, a complex, introspective work that lies somewhere between reprise, commentary, and new creation.

Skin Mitten, written 10 years ago, is a highly personal work which has a special place in Lacey’s life thanks to the plaudits it received when it was first performed in Europe. Having committed to reprising Skin Mitten, Lacey has chosen to reinterpret rather than rewrite the original piece,  Lepeating its steps but stripping it of all peripheral action and props. At the same time, a recording of the original performance is screened in the background. It is subtitled with material written in the studio during rehearsals for the new performance,
alternating between anecdote, faux-detached historical criticism of the piece and commentaries on current events. This running commentary supports the pared down version of the piece being danced live before it. Through the juxtaposition of several periods, Lacey brings us to see the essence of her presence, shared between the presence of the live performer before us and her ‘historical’ presence.

Presented by the Centre de Développement Choréographique Toulouse Midi-Pyrénées and Printemps de septembre.
