Sophie Ansar's work is an act of memory, also perhaps an act of defiance against the dominance of the past. It is photography used as a gesture of freedom, the harnessing of the absurd in order to reconcile the past with the present. Photography, for all that it has serious and historic connection with "the real" is as much a fictionalising device as any other art form. Sophie Ansar is one of a new generation of young women artists who use the medium of photography to explore conundrums, solve puzzles, open up a narrative with the past.
