Rineke Dijkstra

Born in 1959 in Sittard (The Netherlands), she lives and works in Amsterdam.

Rineke Dijkstra's portraits of vagabonds, businessmen, children and teenagers seem to be made just before the sitter is ready or just when his or her attitude slackens. The portraits tell us little about the personality of the models, they are not psychological portraits. They do, however, tell us about the difficulty of accepting oneself or others, about vulnerability, loneliness and isolation.
